Intercultural Relations
Relations between people of different cultural groups are crucial issues in the transcultural world of today. At both the national and international levels, intercultural differences and even ethnic conflicts are important issues, impeding effective relations and social harmony. Although people often believe that we can all get along if we just try, history—and the science of intercultural relations– tells us that conflict is more likely than harmony when people of different cultural groups are brought into contact.
How can we get along better with others?
The likelihood of effective and harmonious intercultural relations are enhanced by knowledge about the dynamics of culture and cross-cultural relations and preparation for cross-cultural adaptation. My book Cultural Awareness, Sensitivity and Competence addresses issues of improving intercultural relations on many different levels, beginning with one’s own personal adjustment.
One of my most read publications is “Culture Shock and Adaptation” This short and simple article provides orientation for how to understand the personal problems produced by cultural differences and how we can develop personal plans for how to adapt and reduce stress.
In support of cross-cultural education and training, I have written Culture and Health: Applying Medical Anthropology, a textbook appropriate for classes in Medical Anthropology, Intercultural Relations, Cross-cultural Counseling, Community Medicine, Transcultural Nursing, Social Work, Cross-cultural Psychology and Public Health
